LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — As the election season ramps up so are the campaign calls and political text messages from candidates canvassing for votes.
A Las Vegas Cyber Security Specialist has now weighed in on how customers can mitigate political campaign robocalls and texts and keep their personal information safe.
“These text messages are the new way of communicating with people, with voters this is the new way of doing it versus emails because people at every cautions on emails were bombarded by emails and now they are switching it over to sms messages and we are getting bombarded by them,” said Cyber Security Specialist Mack Jackson Jr. Owner of Vanderson Cyber Group.
Like many of his clients and other consumers he’s spoken to, Jackson Jr. says he's no stranger when it comes to the bombardment of political campaign messages.
“I can tell you more than just a consultant as a consumer myself bombarded from both sides wanting campaign donations,” Jackson Jr. said.
Unfortunately for consumers, Jackson Jr. says the pesky campaign robocalls and text are all legal; saying it's all within the fine print.
“So basically when you sign up for things in the shopping mall online services or social media that is information about you that is gathered and put into data mining systems that in turn they will critique and look for different characteristics about yourself,” Jackson Jr. added.
According to Jackson Jr., the best advice to prevent being contacted is for consumers to mark the calls or messages as spam and to reply to S.T.O.P. However, Jackson Jr. says while the attempt may slow down the political campaign messages, there is no guarantee it will prevent them in the long run.
“It doesn't stop, because as we know now when the campaign starts again on November 6 for the next one. So, your information will then be sold and marketed to another company that is trying to collect your money or get your information for the next election. So it's a continuous operation.”
Jackson Jr.'s advice to consumers to prevent political campaign calls and text messages is to limit the sharing of personal information on social media.
